This is a rare and important cutting test blade by the Shinshinto smith Masamitsu. Masamitsu was from Takano,Yamagata Gun, in Geishu, which is near present day Hiroshima and was a very popular smith. This blade was made for a samurai named Ogawa Tachibana Masachika, who was from also from Geishu, using local steel. It was made in Tenpo 5, and then in Tenpo 6, taken to the Tokugawa execution grounds in Senju, Edo, where it was tested by the famous Tokugawa executioner, Kubi-Kiri Asaemon. The blade cut through the hips and into the mound beneath. The blade looks like a top quality Hizen-to at first blush, with its thick ko-nie lined suguha. It is in fresh polish, with new habaki and shirasaya. It has NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon kanteisho. |

| Comments: |
Yokoyama Sukenaga is considered one of the top Bizen smiths of the Shinshinto period. He had a large school and produced many talented students. This blade is a representative work done in the large, flamboyant choji for which the school is famous. The blade comes with a top quality period koshirae with nearly all the kodogu by the same maker, Akitoshi. Akitoshi is listed in the Kinko Meikan as working in Edo in the Shinshinto period. Tsuba is a nice shakudo with nanako ground and gold kiri mon. Kojiri/koiguchi, fuchi/gashira are iron ground with gold fuji. Original koshirae of this quality and in this condition are quite scarce; to come complete with a blade of this quality is rare indeed. This piece is a shoe-in for Tokubetsu Hozon. |

| Comments: |
This small tanto came in an old shirasaya with sayagaki stating that it was made using Hoki steel by Gassan Sadakazu. Judging by the jitetsu, it certainly looks like Hoki steel, and the shape and workmanship is very similar to that of Sadakazu. As it is mumei, there is no way to know for sure. In fresh polish with new shirasaya. |
